After my second time in residence in the French countryside, I can confirm that it is a special place for my work.

A musician friend wisely described the south of France as "God's country". More than accurate, one feels not only privileged, but holy, after experiencing such unique greenspace. This is why I return. The quiet is precious enough to allow me to remain still and experience nuance. This time, I finished several books and completed three new essays along with several new poems. I also began the outline and story for my latest theater project, Saintete: a talent show, based on the writings of French playwright and ultimate hero, Jean Genet

I have not yet received funding for my residencies but I use that as a motivator for my next research space. I require a month minimum, and, so far have stayed about 7 weeks at the most. Pack light of course, and if you are a visual artist, possibly ship your tools prior. As a writer, I do a lot of reading for inspiration, so also consider shipping books to lighten your load. And, concerning southern France, the further south you go, the more secluded the villages are making certain amenities distant. Consider this when doing residency research. Also, consider this based on the level of community and sharing you would like to experience. Smaller residencies may be more communal and larger residencies may not. Decide the needs of you and your work
