Duration of my residency
3 weeks
Reason(s) of the residency
Working out of the usual context
What was my residency project?
My time in France was everything I hoped it would be and more. A time of exploration and discovery. I took with me 20 yards of red dupioni silk and 300 yards of fine copper wire, not sure of the form they would take. Near the residency was a 13th century ruin that I visited several times. The shape and history of this abandoned castle inspired the title for my installation, La Ruine Oubliee, translation: Forgotten Ruin.
I created 12 panels (56 flags per) using the silk, wire and locally sourced sisal. The first configuration was a direct response to the ruin, a towering shape that echoed the remains of the castle. This to me also represented a basket, a space defined by interwoven elements. The second configuration, sub title, memoire passagere ( fleeting memory), explores the transition of the castle to ruin. As the stones were carried away to build other structures the flags reform and appear to take flight. The third and final configuration, memoire, is a response to the movement of the stones (flags) over time and a suggestion that only our memories hold the shape of the original form. The wind creates ever-changing patterns that defy the organized structure of the panels and the sun reveals a record of this energy through shadow.
Layers of interwoven materials and forms that use wind, light, and color to tell a story of construction and deconstruction and my place in this process.

My opinion on artistay's service:
Artistay was very helpful in finding the right residency for my project.
