Duration of my residency
2 weeks
Reason(s) of the residency
Working out of the usual context
What was my residency project?
It is about the question: why we are here, you, me, and all people around us?
The project will be in a format of the video game. The purpose is to rich the wider audience and definitely to include children, make them engaged with the idea. This format will help to start a dialog between generations. During two weeks in Cxxx I researched what I need to accomplish this project. The Processing and Open Frameworks open source software will provide the interaction.
Positive aspects I have gained from my residency
During two weeks of residency I spent time thinking about being an independent artist. The Cxxx environment, the discussions with other artists, the observation of children learning art, the impressions from attending current exhibitions in Paris (Le Louvre, Le musée du quai Branly , Le Centre Pompidou), the encounters with friends and places made me a different person, and the idea of the project got changed.
Funding of the residency
Self-funding
My opinion on artistay's service:
I appreciate artistay's service. I had all information and guidelines I need. To plan my residency for the first time was very smooth and fun experience because of the service.
  • The intention of my project is to address the issue of assimilation in everyday life of ordinary people. It is based on observation of my own adjustment process. The proposed project is an experimental small screen video installation. I will apply a surrealistic approach to create a visual metaphor about transformations of my mentality. Coming from Post-Soviet Russia to the West altered my way of thinking and rewired my brain. I keep questioning how I see the world. The surrealistic composition will show how people without eyes are catching butterflies with eyes and pinning them as masks to their faces. The eye textures for 3D butterfly mask model are randomly generated from the database. The background layer is the randomly generated video clip from the database. Video clip is a representation of different cultural landscapes**. As the background environment changes the mask flies away and the chase for those butterflies continues.
** Within academia, any system of interaction between human activity and natural habitat is regarded as a cultural landscape. In a sense this understanding is broader than the definition applied within UNESCO, including, as it does, almost the whole of the world's occupied surface, plus almost all the uses, ecologies, interactions, practices, beliefs, concepts, and traditions of people living within cultural landscapes.
